Gayle sent me this video this afternoon and when you first think “synchronized bicycle riding” you think it would be lame right? I think this is my new favorite sport! OK maybe not but you have to admit it is pretty cool in a odd way.
When Tracy McGrady of the NBA heard about the massive challenges children from Darfur were facing in the refugee camps in Chad, he decided to travel there. The video is very moving and gets really good about 20 minutes in. You can see Tracy transition his thoughts from giving the refugees a soccer field and an indoor swimming pool to things they really need like security and food. The women’s stories of rape and murder are powerful, very powerful. It was interesting to hear the mothers tell McGrady how difficult it is to comfort the children who watched their fathers die (some buried alive). When the children were asked to draw pictures, they drew men on horses with guns killing people and helicopters which bombed their villages. They drew themselves hiding in the bushes with men shooting at them. When asked how long they hid in the bushes they responded “one month”. They walked for 10 days or about 800 miles to reach the refugee camps (remember they are just children, some without parents). How the UN doesn’t consider this genocide is beyond me. The stories about the white planes was also troubling. The UN planes are painted white to deliver aid so the government painted their planes white and bomb them so the refugees don’t know who they can trust. Amazing to think someone’s own government could do something like this to the people of its nation and little has been done to try and stop it. If you are moved by the video, check out the website at http://www.darfurdreamteam.org/ (built in Drupal…open source). Let me know what you think…
