“Most success springs from an obstacle or failure. I became a cartoonist largely because I failed in my goal of becoming a successful executive.” – Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert)
Went to see District 9 this afternoon and I can’t tell you the last time I’ve seen two movies in one week, let alone a weekend. The movie was strange, just really strange and slightly boring. I won’t ruin anything by telling you it is basically about an alien ship that is broke down above a city, millions of aliens come out of it, and the humans control them by putting them in a camp called “District 9″. The aliens are mistreated, this guy from some alien company gets splattered with some alien goo which starts to turn him into an alien which allows him to use their weapons. If you like aliens, lots of violence, graphic scenes of people puking, blood, and skin falling off, this movie is for you. Good special effects but I give it 4 out of 10 stars.
Now that I am reading lots of kids books again it is interesting to look at what we teach children and what we end up doing with the information as we become older. When growing up we tend to learn to forget what is possible, we better understand our capabilities, we doubt ourselves, we let others tell us what we can and cannot do. When you ask a young child if they can do something, chances are they will answer yes. Once older that same child will likely learn to analyze his or her past experiences, as well as what others have advised in similar situations, and make an “informed decision”. Don’t let others hold you back from your dreams and don’t let others tell you what you can and can’t do. If you look at all of the people who have become successful at something in life, chances are they failed when they first started doing it. I’ll probably mess up a quote I heard but it basically said “can’t never could until it tried”. As long as you learn from your mistakes and continually remind yourself that “I think I can, I think I can”, chances are you can.
I had to have some blood work done about a month and a half ago. I’m not big on needles and I’m certainly not big on blood so when you combine those two things together I am a complete wreck. I somehow managed to gather enough courage to get my blood drawn and let me tell you the guy who took it was super nice about the whole thing. I was a big baby and made sure to communicate that I am squeamish around needles and blood and was really hesitant to give him my arm. I felt super light headed but miraculously somehow survived. I even got a nice cold Gatorade in the process. Some poor lady who came in with crutches beside me must have laughed seeing a 31 year old guy in a shirt and tie moaning and groaning like a big baby. Seriously I thought I was going to pass out there for a while. Why am I talking about all of this? Oh yeah…healthcare…yeah don’t really like it sometimes. I ended up paying $194 for one of the tests which evidently wasn’t covered by my insurance unbeknownst to me. If you ever followed the Show 30 Day from Morgan Spurlock (the man who produced SuperSize Me), he did a show on minimum wage. It basically showed if you are poor in this country and can’t afford insurance you are pretty much forgotten about which is sad and we need to take care of the people of this world not forget about them. I’m not saying what I embedded above is perfect, I’m not saying Obama’s plan is perfect, but what I am saying is we need to at least do something because what we are doing isn’t working.
