Happy Birthday To Me

December 10th, 2008 by Jeremy

I woke up this morning and went into my “computer room” and saw my sister was calling my cell phone.  I completely forgot it was my birthday today so that was a nice surprise.  She told my mom the other day I am going to have to remember to change my age on my blog which I thought was funny.  I either had the flu yesterday or the stress of the divorce got to me which was no fun.  I am feeling way better this morning but am going to stay home to make sure I get better as I have literally been sick for the past few months off and on which probably is because of the stress.  So you can imagine when I have been blowing out candles what my wish for the future will be.  I just wanna get my mojo back.  :)

So Tyler was full of energy after his bath tonight so I got the tube that my parents bought him from IKEA out and decided to make the spare bedroom his playroom.  How cool are his spiderman pajamas by the way?

Ubuntu: Run Boot-Time Scripts in Parallel

December 7th, 2008 by Jeremy

If anyone knows the source of the article below let me know and I’ll link over to it.  I emailed myself only the part of the verbiage I needed.

“Whenever Ubuntu boots, it runs several scripts that start necessary background services. By default, these are set to run one by one, but if you have a processor with more than one core, such as Intel’s CoreDuo series or AMD’s Athlon X2, you can configure Ubuntu to run the scripts in parallel. This way, all the cores are utilized, and you can save quite a bit of time at each boot.

To make the change, type the following to open the necessary configuration file in Gedit:

gksu gedit /etc/init.d/rc

Look for the line that reads CONCURRENCY=none, and change it so it reads CONCURRENCY=shell. Then save the file and reboot your computer.

Using this method I managed to shave a massive twenty seconds off my desktop PC’s usual startup time of just less than a minute.”

Jeremy’s Chocolate Chip Cookies (Kinda)

December 7th, 2008 by Jeremy

At Teah’s Christmas party last night she had all kinds of fancy foods and well I just ate the cookies so after being inspired I decided to bake cookies with Tyler today.  I know I haven’t had a chance to test my cooking skills much so I figured I might as well learn now without someone seeing my blunders while it is just me and Tyler in the kitchen.  I’ll try and remember to bring some into work tomorrow if anyone wants to risk trying my baking.  I think they turned out pretty well and let me tell you Tyler definitely approved.  The recipe below is from the back of Safeway’s chocolate chips.

Bake these luscious cookies just the way you like them – a few minutes less for soft, chewy centers, a few minutes longer for crisper cookies.

1/2 lb. (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup packed golden brown sugar 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
2 large eggs 3/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons milk or water 1 11.5 oz. package Safeway Milk Chocolate Chips
1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup chopped walnuts, optional

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Mix butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.  Mix in eggs, milk or water, and vanilla.  Mix in flour, soda and salt until incorporated.  Mix in milk chocolate chips and nuts.  Drop by rounded teaspoons 1 1/2 inches apart on greased baking sheets.  Bake for 11 to 12 minutes.  Cool 2 minutes and remove to racks.  Makes about 60 cookies.  Recipies developed by cookbook author Mariene Sorosky Gray.
